About Brainpool AI

At Brainpool AI we are an artificial intelligence consultancy based in the United Kingdom and a team of about 15 people distributed between the United Kingdom, Uruguay and Argentina. We build Cortex, our platform of agentic workflows for professional services, and deliver tailored AI projects for clients in Europe and the US. USA. Our management is moving to Montevideo this year, so LATAM is not a satellite: it is a central part of the company.

The role

We are looking for a Senior DevOps Engineer to join a long-term project with one of our clients in the USA. USA: an organization that operates a self-hosted GitLab where various research laboratories exchange data, models and code with each other. You're going to be responsible for the infrastructure on which all of that runs: GitLab self-hosted, GitLab Runner, CI/CD pipelines, and the entire Terraform-managed AWS blueprint that supports it.

Because you are going to work directly with the client's team in the US. USA, <strong>professional Advanced English (C1 or higher) is a non-negotiable requirement</strong>. You will have technical meetings in English several times a week, you will write documentation and RFCs in English, and you will coordinate with the Brainpool team in the United Kingdom also in English. If your written and spoken English is not at that level today, this role is not for you. If it is, you will feel at home.

The role is 100% remote. We call for a solid overlap with US East Coast/Central Time. USA (at least 4–5 hours of daily overlap).

Main responsibilities

  • Operate and evolve the client's self-hosted GitLab infrastructure: high availability, runner performance, backups, upgrades and, eventually, GitLab Geo or equivalent for multi-region resilience.
  • Design, write, and maintain reusable Terraform modules that describe the entire infrastructure on AWS (VPC, EKS/ECS, IAM, S3, KMS, RDS, etc.).
  • Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines for multiple research laboratories, with multi-tenant access controls and traceability of artifacts, models and datasets.
  • Implement secure mechanisms for data and model exchange between laboratories: S3 storage, signed URLs, container and model registries, granular IAM policies.
  • Define and implement the observability strategy (metrics, logs, traces, alerts) and incident response.
  • Participate in technical meetings with the client in the USA. USA, propose architectures, write RFCs and document decisions in English.
  • Work closely with the Brainpool engineering team to align practices, safety standards and roadmap.

Requirements (must-have)

  • <strong>Professional advanced English (C1 or higher), written and spoken.</strong> You will be in meetings with the client in the US. USA since the first week.
  • 6+ years of experience in DevOps, SRE, Platform Engineering or Cloud Infrastructure roles.
  • <strong>4+ years working with Terraform in production</strong>, writing reusable modules and managing remote state, workspaces and IaC pipelines.
  • Solid experience with AWS: VPC, IAM, S3, EC2, EKS or ECS, RDS, CloudWatch, KMS.
  • GitLab self-hosted management (or very strong equivalent experience with on-prem CI/CD: Jenkins, Argo, GitHub Actions self-hosted).
  • Deep-level Linux, networking (TCP/IP, DNS, TLS, VPN, peering) and basic infrastructure security.
  • Habit of working with Git, code review, technical documentation and "everything as code" mentality.

Desirable (nice-to-have)

  • Kubernetes in production (EKS preferably).
  • HashiCorp Vault, SOPS or other secret management tools.
  • GitLab Geo, multi-region replication, or experience with HA in version control systems.
  • Previous context in scientific computing, ML Ops, research laboratories, or handling large datasets/GPU loads.
  • Modern observability (Grafana, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry, Datadog).
  • AWS or HashiCorp certifications.

What we offer

  • <strong>Contractor rate in USD: USD 5,800 – 7,200 monthly</strong>, according to experience and technical interview. Exceptional candidates can negotiate above that rank.
  • 100% remote, from Chile, Argentina or Uruguay.
  • Flexible schedule, with the only condition of overlapping at least 4–5 hours with the east/central US coast. USA.
  • 20 business days of paid vacation per year, plus local holidays.
  • Annual budget for training and conferences (Re:Invent, KubeCon, HashiConf, certifications).
  • A small, distributed and technical team, without unnecessary management layers. We are not a body-shop: you will have a real voice in architectural decisions.
  • The opportunity to work with a serious client in the USA. USA and to build critical infrastructure for scientific research.
